COTTON Gossypium sp. (MALVACEAE)

a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including India and Africa.

Uses
In addition to the textile industry, cotton is used in fishnets, coffee filters, tents, gunpowder, cotton paper, and in bookbinding. The cottonseed which remains after the cotton is ginned is used to produce cottonseed oil, which, after refining, can be consumed by humans like any other vegetable oil. The cottonseed meal that is left generally is fed to livestock. In recent time still more attention is paid to the bio-cotton in planting as well as in processing and final use.
Ecology and planting
Cotton needs on an average a minimum temperature of 15°C for germination, 20 - 27°C for vegetative growth, 27 - 32°C wi t h cool nights during f r u i t i n g period and cotton requires a long growing season (from 180 to 200 days). Soils must be with excellent water holding capacity and aeration with a 600 - 800 mm of water during its lifetime. An annual rainfall of at least 500 mm is minimum requirement for cotton unless it is grown on irrigated soils. Plant density per ha is 70 000 – 100 000. Thinning of cotton is a special feature of the irrigated crop. It has a taproot and main stem, of which branches develop to support leaves and fruit or bolls as they are referred to in cotton. At maturity, the boll splits open, revealing a mass of long white seed hairs, the length of the cotton fibres ranges from 1.3 to 6 cm.
Mycorrhiza & Bio-fertilizers
Reintroduction of mycorrhiza can positively infl uence yield stability of monocrop fi elds and prolong the time when full production of the fi eld is secured. Mycorrhiza increases resistance to soil borne pathogens and reduces vulnerability of crop to drought stress. Inoculation of cotton during the machine-sowing is just being tested. Cotton has been reported as a highly mycorrhiza dependent species and the expected yield increase is minimum 15% of total biomass. Mycorrhiza product Symbivit® together with bio-fertilizer Conavit® is recommended for organic cotton and fair trade cotton products.
